NEW YORK —Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly says the slaves who built the White House were “well fed” and had decent government housing, sparking a firestorm of criticism over what he called a fact check of Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention,

“Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House, but there were others working as well,” O’Reilly said on his show Tuesday.

The Fox News commentator added that slaves who worked there “were well fed and had decent lodging provided by the government.”

Obama’s speech was widely lauded .

“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves,” Obama said. “And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”

O’Reilly’s comments have drawn criticism on social media, including from actress and singer Audra McDonald.
