Police: Teen bicyclist struck and killed by alleged drunk driver in Brooklyn

GERRITSEN BEACH, Brooklyn – Police have arrested a man for allegedly driving drunk and killing a teenager who was riding his bike late Sunday night.

The NYPD said officers responded to a call of a bicyclist struck at the intersection of Gerritsen and Gotham Avenues at approximately 8:47 p.m. When they arrived, police found 17-year-old Sean Ryan unconscious.

EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD found that Thomas Groarke, 24, was driving a White Honda accord heading southbound on Gerritsen Avenue, when he crossed into the painted median and struck Ryan, who was going northbound on the same avenue, according to police.

The vehicle remained at the scene and Groarke was taken into custody, and was later charged.

Groarke faces a vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired charges, police said.
