Bayonne Bridge to remain closed until morning due to overturned truck

BAYONNE, N.J. — The Bayonne Bridge will remain closed until Tuesday morning after a tractor trailer overturned Monday afternoon.

Officials closed the bridge just before 5 p.m. after the tractor trailer overturned.

The tractor trailer was carrying 60,000 pounds of cargo when the accident happened.

All traffic is being diverted to the Goethals Bridge.

At 6:30 p.m., officials said the Bayonne Bridge would remain closed up to and through the overnight closure until 4:30 a.m. while they remove the truck.

According to Port Authority statistics, over 147,000 vehicles used the Bayonne Bridge in May, 2016. More than 1.3 million vehicles crossed the Goethals Bridge during that period.
