STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The 8-year-old boy who was hospitalized after he nearly drowned in a pool on the Royal Caribbean “Anthem of the Seas” cruise ship last month has died, officials said Monday.

The boy, Prince Adepoju, of Maryland, passed away in the hospital two days after the incident, the Staten Island Advance reported Monday.

“We are heartbroken to learn the news of his passing,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement to Staten Island Advance. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this terribly sad time.”

Adepoju and his family were on the Royal Caribbean “Anthem of the Seas” cruise ship on June 30. The ship had left the New York Harbor and was heading to the Caribbean that evening when Adepoju was found in the pool. Officials said he was in the water for eight to 10 minutes before he was pulled out.

The cruise ship changed its course and sailed towards Bayonne where the FDNY and NYPD met them.

The 8-year-old received CPR on the ship before he was transported to Staten Island University Hospital by police helicopter.

He was listed in critical condition and spent his time in Pediatric Intensive Care Unite before he passed away on July 2, according to the Staten Island Advance.

The medical examiner has ruled his death as an accident.
