Woman helps man, 58, escape vacant burning building in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. — A 58-year-old man suffered only minor burns when he escaped a burning building in Newark Saturday evening.

Fire broke out on the first floor of the vacant building near the corner of South Orange and Speedway avenues around 5:20 p.m., police said.

A woman helped the man escape the burning building before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The fire was placed under control in approximately 35 minutes.

The man was taken to the hospital with minor burns on both arms.

It’s unclear why the man was in the vacant building at the time. Police are investigating the exact cause of the fire.
