HYANNIS, Mass. — Officials say a 2-year-old girl sustained second-degree burns on her feet after stepping on hot coals dumped on a Cape Cod beach.

Barnstable police Sgt. Mark Butler said the child walked over coals that had been dumped onto the sand Sunday afternoon at Veteran’s Park Beach in Hyannis.

Butler says the child was taken via helicopter to a Rhode Island hospital. Hyannis fire Capt. Mark Storie tells the Cape Cod Times the girl suffered second-degree burns to the bottom of her feet.

The beach, which is located next to the John F. Kennedy Memorial, has a grilling and picnic area.
