After spending nearly a year getting sequins and glitter out of their bedsheets, NYC’s mermaids and sea men are ready to undo all their hard work. Join a packed crowd on Coney Island’s streets for an epic procession of wild floats, barely clad revelers and beachside celebrating. Now in its 34th year, the world’s largest arts parade welcomes partygoers of all ages to rejoice in kitsch, camp and craft, but those who are serious about their scales can register to win iconic titles, including best sea creature, best motorized float, King Neptune and Queen Mermaid.
When: Saturday, June 18 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 19 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Where: Brooklyn Pet Expo, 72 Noble St, Brooklyn
Animal lovers, beware: You’ll likely break into tears at some point during this massive dog and pony show (or should we say dog and cat show?), whether while visiting adoption booths or witnessing the glory of dancing pugs at the talent show. The Brooklyn Expo Center will be packed wall-to-wall with training courses, volunteer information and vendors shelling out irresistible apparel for your furry soul mate. Whether you’re treating your best pal to a new wardrobe or looking to meet a new companion, you won’t leave this expo empty-handed. Bring your pets!
When: Sunday, June 19 at noon
Where: Museum at Eldridge Street, 12 Eldridge St., Lower East Side
Immerse yourself in the cultural delights of the Jewish, Chinese and Puerto Rican communities of Chinatown and the Lower East Side at this block party. While Peking Opera performers and klezmer bands take the outdoor stage, you can catch free language lessons, master your Mahjongg game and, best of all, learn how to prepare empanadas, Chinese dumplings and kreplachandchallah bread. Endless grub will be available for sale.
