EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn — Two people are in custody after their car crashed into another vehicle, killing the passenger and injuring the driver in East New York Friday night.
A black Ford Explorer was speeding down Georgia Avenue when it struck a silver Toyota Sienna around 10 p.m., police said. After the crash, the 29-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer attempted to flee the scene, but officers caught him. The 21-year-old passenger stayed inside the car, according to police.
The driver and passenger in the Toyota Sienna were taken to the hospital. The 32-year-old driver is in stable condition. The passenger, identified as Saber Mohammed, 20, of Brooklyn, had severe body trauma and was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, later identified as Christopher Cates, 29, or Bronx, was charged with multiple counts including manslaughter, leaving the scene of the accident and possession of marijuana.
The passenger, identified as Janpoll Ramos-Colon, 21, of Brooklyn, was charged with criminal possession of marijuana.
The crash is under investigation.
