Small plane crashes at New Jersey airport; no injuries

FAIRFIELD, N.J. — A couple escaped injury when their small plane crashed at a New Jersey airport.

The Beech BE 36 went down around noon Sunday as the pilot was trying to land at Essex County Airport in Fairfield. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash, but officials say the plane apparently experienced engine failure.

The pilot and his wife were the only people aboard the plane. Their names have not been released.

The airport and its runways were closed while authorities investigated the crash.
