LAS VEGAS — Canadian musician The Weeknd honored his hero Prince during his award acceptance speech at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards.

“I want to dedicate this award to the late, great Prince,” The Weeknd said after winning the Top Hot 100 Artist Award.

The Weeknd said he met Prince last November at the American Music Awards. Prince gave him the award for best soul/R&B album.

“It was the greatest experience of my life,” The Weeknd said while holding his trophy at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “I didn’t know him, but he was very close to me, and he will always be an inspiration and help me push the envelope.”

The Weeknd is up for 19 awards including Top R&B Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist and Top Selling Song.
