EDENWALD, The Bronx—A woman was arrested Monday after she allegedly left her pet Yorkie alone while she vacationed on an eight-day Caribbean cruise, police said.

Acting on a tip that the 2-year-old dog was whimpering continuously inside the woman’s Bronx apartment, police responded and found the dog with no food or water nearby, police said.

Officers removed the dog and determined the dog’s owner Sasha Diaz, 23, was on an eight-day cruise to the Bahamas, police said.

Diaz was issued a desk appearance ticket Monday on a misdemeanor charge of “overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; failing to provide proper sustenance for animals,” police said.

She’s been ordered to appear in court in July, a spokesperson for the Bronx District Attorney’s Office said.

The dog, who has been nicknamed Mikey, is in the custody of the ASPCA.
