NEW YORK CITY – Hundreds of police officers geared up Monday morning to bike some 300 miles from the 911 Memorial in New York City to Washington D.C. in honor of comrades who have been killed in the line of duty.

The four-day bike ride honoring the more than 20,000 officers who have been killed begins with a ceremony at the 911 Memorial before the participants head off to D.C.

The nearly 20-year-old event began with just 18 New Jersey officers, and has since grown to about 1,800 across the country taking part.

The Nassau County Police Department, Port Authority Police Department, among other police jurisdictions are expected to participate this year.
