NEW YORK — Authorities say a 24-year-old man has died after hitting his head while surfing on the outside of a subway car in New York.

Police say James Rubio, of Queens, was found unconscious and lying between two subway cars on a Queens-bound F train around 2:30 a.m. Friday when the train reached the Jay Street-MetroTech station in Brooklyn.

They said Rubio died at a local hospital.

A representative for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the city’s subway system, told the New York Daily News that the man had been riding on the outside of the train, which is illegal.
