MARIN COUNTY, Calif. – Afeni Shakur Davis, mother of one of hip-hop’s most seminal and iconic figures Tupac Shakur, died Monday night at her California home, authorities said. She was 69.

Deputies with the Marin County Sheriff’s Department responded about 9:30 p.m. Monday to Shakur Davis' home in Sausalito. They had received a call of a possible cardiac arrest. Shakur was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, sheriff’s officials said.

Information is still being gathered, and the sheriff's department will answer questions regarding her death later Tuesday morning, it said.

The county’s coroner will determine her cause of death.

Though she is best known as Tupac’s mom, Shakur Davis was also a Black Panther as a young adult and an activist in later years.
