TEANECK, N.J. — Lizette Parker, the mayor of Teaneck, has died, the township manager has confirmed. She was 44 years old.
Parker passed away Sunday morning after she was taken to the hospital for respiratory issues.
“Mayor Parker was a strong leader, public advocate and a consummate professional, who was greatly respected by her colleagues and the community,” Township Manager William Broughton said in a press release.
“Her love, presences and sincerity will be sorely missed in Township government and in the community.”
“The family of Mayor Parker kindly requests that mourners respect their privacy at this most difficult time,” Broughton said.
In 2014, Parker became the first African American woman to be elected mayor in Bergen County.
Flags will be lowered to half-staff to honor the mayor. Teaneck’s Deputy Mayor Elie Katz will be taking over the role.
