12-year-old playing with plumber’s torch sets garage on fire in Long Island

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — A 12-year-old is being charged with arson after he set a garage on fire with a plumber’s torch, police said.

On Friday at 5 p.m., a 12-year-old boy was playing with a plumber’s torch in the backyard of a home on Union Place and set a detached garage on fire, Nassau County Police said.

The Hempstead Fire Department arrived to find the garage fully engulfed in flames and extinguished the fire.

No injuries were reported. The boy is being charged with arson 4th degree as a juvenile.
