Two girls, ages 1 and 2, killed in fire at Butler Houses

CLAREMONT VILLAGE, The Bronx -- Two young girls died in a fire that ripped through a Bronx public housing complex in the Bronx Wednesday evening.

Firefighters responded to a fire at the Butler Houses on Webster Avenue around 6:33 p.m., police said. The fire was extinguished nearly an hour later.

The victims, a 2-year-old Jannubi Jabie and 18-month-old Amanda Jabie, were found inside the apartment and were taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The city medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Six people and two firefighters also suffered minor injuries.

Red Cross assisted the six families displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
