NEWARK, N.J. – A Rutgers University student is dead after a double shooting inside an off-campus apartment near the school Sunday night.

The fatal shooting happened inside a private residence on 28 Central Ave. around 10 p.m.

A Rutgers press release stated a student was killed in the shooting. According to friends at the scene, the slain victim was from Tom's River, New Jersey.

The second victim, who is not associated with the school, is receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at an area hospital.

The university deemed the attack not to be a "random act" of violence and there are no safety threats to the school community.

The assailants appear to be about 20 years of age, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 145 pounds. One of the gunmen was shirtless. Both alleged culprits fled on foot in a southbound direction on Halsey Street.

The incident remains under investigation by the Newark and Rutgers police departments, as well as the Essex County Prosecutors Office.
