PORTLAND — American soccer star Abby Wambach, who recently retired, was arrested early Sunday on a driving under the influence charge in Portland, Oregon.
Wambach, 35, was arrested shortly after 2 a.m., according to the Multnomah County Jail in Portland. She was released on her own recognizance.
Wambach has been among the most-decorated players in women’s soccer.
In a career spanning 14 years, Wambach amassed two Olympic gold medals, one World Cup, a FIFA World Player of the Year award and six U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year crowns.
Wambach posted an apology on Facebook Sunday afternoon.
“I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated,” she wrote on Facebook.
