FREMONT, Calif. — On Thursday, police found a lost baby seal more than three miles away from the bay.
The Fremont Police found “Ozzie” without any visible injuries in the front yard of a home on Osgood Road.
Authorities gently wrapped Ozzie in a towel, took her to Tri-City Animal Shelter and tagged her. California Marine Mammal Center picked her up.
They found out her real name is Kumofur, a 9-month-old northern fur seal.
She was originally released into Bodega Bay and should have headed north to Alaska, but the Marine Mammal Center said she “went in the wrong direction,” explaining “sometimes they follow a school of fish and just keep going until they realize they are lost” and “start wandering.”
Kumofur will receive some rest, a health exam and some food before she’s released “with a little waterproof map” this time.
The Fremont Police said, “We feel pretty lucky that we had the opportunity to meet this pup and wish her a long and healthy life!”
