RIDGEWOOD, Queens -- Police are looking for the man accused of assaulting an elderly woman and stealing her groceries at gunpoint as she walked in the Ridgewood section of Queens Wednesday afternoon.

The 87-year-old woman was walking near the intersection of Cypress Hills Street and Shaler Avenue around noon when she was suddenly pushed to the ground, and her groceries stolen.

“I see a lot of shady characters around here," said Rita, an elderly woman who lives in the area. "But I don’t know. They have hoods on. They have hats on, you don’t know what the hell they look like, they have dark glasses on and everything, so."

All police have to go on right now is a grainy photo.

It’s supposed to show the suspect, described rather generically as a black man, 40 to 50 years old, 5 foot 5 to 5 foot 8 inches tall.

Detectives are asking for help from anyone who knows anything about the mugging.

In the meantime, Rita says she’s always on the lookout.

“I walk fast, so uh, I look behind me. I have my eye open, plus my nephew gave me mace. So I carry mace with me."
