OKLAHOMA — The grandpa who was captured in a heartbreaking photo looking disappointed when his grandkids skipped dinner is hosting a cookout, and everyone is invited.
College Student Kelsey Harmon tweeted a photo of her grandpa last Wednesday with the caption: “Dinner with papaw tonight…he made 12 burgers for all 6 grandkids and I’m the only one who showed. (crying emoji) love him.”
The photo quickly went viral. By the next day, it had been retweeted more than 100,000 times and favorited over 180,000 times.
The five other grandkids eventually made it to dinner later and were forgiven for missing the last one. Brock Harmon, one of the grandkids, tweeted out a photo for proof.
To share the love and make papaw even happier, everyone can have a meal with papaw at a cookout that’s schedule to take place in Oklahoma next Saturday.
“Papaw would like me to formally announce he’s having a cookout!!! Next Saturday on March 26th from 11-4 Papaw will be cooking burgers!!” Brock Harmon, one of the grandchildren, wrote in a note posted on Twitter Friday.
The family will be selling burgers for $2 and T-shirts with papaw’s picture on it with the phrase, “I had a burger with Papaw.”
They’re not sure how many people will show up, but thousands of people have already responded to the invitation. It received more than 6,000 retweets and 7,000 likes on Twitter as of Sunday.
Brock said the money from the cookout will go to his grandfather and “what he decides to do with them is his business,” according to Buzzfeed News.
After the picture was posted last week, many people said it made them miss their grandparents. Kelsey also said people wrote that they never really get a chance to see their grandparents, which she said her “hearts aches for them.”
Twitter users also claimed Kelsey was trying to use the moment to become famous.
“I’ve done nothing worth of fame, I truly only posted the picture of papaw to show my appreciation,” Kelsey wrote in a note she posted on Twitter.
“Family is the most important thing in my world & I’d never take advantage of them to gain followers and fame for a few day,” Kelsey wrote.
