NEWARK, N.J. – Authorities are expected to resume searching for a man who ended up in the Passaic River in northern New Jersey.

Newark police say the victim’s friends called them on Monday around 5 p.m. reporting that the man was in the river and was swept away before they could help him.

Investigators are attempting to determine why the victim entered the water and have ruled out that he may have accidentally fallen in. Police say the evidence doesn’t suggest that it’s a suicide attempt.

Dive teams were called to the scene and assisted police officers and firefighters in searching for the man.

Authorities suspended the search for the night just before 11 p.m. It will resume in the morning.
