LUBBOCK, Texas — A mother has been arrested after her 3-year-old daughter was found wandering their apartment complex alone, “extremely dirty” and complaining of hunger.

According to police, the toddler was found wandering alone at the Corte Vista Apartments. Three-year-old complained she was hungry and said, “I need a beer,” a police report obtained by KJTV said.

A police report said the girl was “extremely dirty,” appeared as if she hadn’t been bathed in a while, and was covered with red bumps that looked like bed bug bites.

Police knocked on the open door of her home and called for the toddler’s mother, Shauna Bennett, 42.

Inside, the officer found cockroaches climbing walls and a filthy kitchen with “moldy” dishes.

Police also found Bennett asleep inside the home. When she woke, she had no idea where her daughter was, police said.

“This was a clear neglect on the mother’s part,” LPD Lt. Ray Mendoza told KJTV.

“It was the conditions the child was living under and the fact that the mom was completely oblivious to where the child had been or where it was at the time.”

The owner of the apartment complex found the 3-year-old wandering two weeks ago and told the mother to clean up the apartment, KJTV reports.

However, Keith Graves, a neighbor of the Bennett’s who regularly babysits for her, said it was a misunderstanding.

“[She] is very rambunctious and has a lot of energy and she knows how to get out of the apartment — so she got out of the apartment and did what a three year old does, play around,” Graves said. “Shauna was doing the best that she could under the circumstances that she was in.”

Bennett was arrested and charged with abandoning and endangering a child.
