Apollo Amateur Night: Behind the cheers and boos

HARLEM, Manhattan – For 82 years and counting, the audience at the Apollo Theater has been the toughest crowd in town.

Some of the biggest stars in the business like Lauryn Hill, Luther Vandross and even Ne-Yo didn't make the cut at weekly amateur night competition.

But others like Jimi Hendrix got a warmer reception. Hendrix won first place in an amateur night contest in 1964.

Grammy-award winner Chrisette Michelle kicked off the new season last weekend set the bar for the contestants that followed.

Contestants of all ages show off a variety of talents at the contest, hoping to cash in on the $10,000 top prize — but they have to get pass the Apollo audience first.
