CLIFFWOOD, N.J. — New Jersey State Police arrested two men who allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of spices in New Jersey.

Linden Police Department and the Interstate Theft North Unit teamed up Feb. 17 to recover a stolen tractor-trailer in Jersey City.

Police were able to determine that the stolen truck made a stop at a storage facility in Cliffwood.

During their investigation, police witnessed Luis Rivera, 50, of Jersey City and Samir Helou, 56, of Brooklyn at the storage facility. Police then found 75,456 units of Shan brand spices in a storage unit that Rivera and Helou had keys to.

Helou was charged with receiving stolen property and possession of fireworks. He is being held at Monmouth County Jail in lieu of $75,000 full cash bail. Rivera was charged with receiving stolen property and is being held on $50,000 full cash bail.

Detectives are unsure the reason why the duo was allegedly in possession of that much spice.
