QUEENS — A man accused of fatally stabbing a woman and her two children and injuring another child has been arrested in Queens.
Michael Sykes, 25, was arrested Saturday around 4 p.m. for the fatal stabbing of three people at the Ramada Inn in Staten island.
Sykes was charged with three counts of murder, attempted murder and robbery.
Mayor de Blasio released a statement on Sykes arrest:
Thanks goes to the hard-working officers of the NYPD for bringing Mr. Sykes into custody. The judicial process can now begin to run its course. I hope the family members of the young mother and her small children can find some amount of closure in knowing he has been apprehended.
The stabbing happened around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, police said. Hotel staff discovered Rebecca Cutler, 26, and her three children with stab wounds.
Police said Cutler and her daughters had returned from a diner not far from the hotel. Sykes allegedly waited in the hallway for them and attacked when they returned.
Cutler was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Her daughters — Ziana Cutler, 1, and Maiyah Sykes, 4 months — were rushed to another hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Cutler's third daughter underwent surgery and police say the 2-year-old "looks like she's going to make it."
A large kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.
Cutler and her children had been living at the hotel since August 2015. The hotel had been housing families who would otherwise be homeless.
Sources say Sykes is on his way to the police precinct in Staten Island.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
