The rule of thumb this frigid weekend: if you are cold outside, so are your pets.

Dr. Yasmine Mortsakis owns NY Vet Practice.

She recommends dressing your pets in winter gear if they're venturing out in cold temperatures. Coats, sweaters and boots are appropriate, she says.

Injured paws are a growing concern this winter- even with mostly mild temperatures because she says pet owners are taking less precaution.

"The biggest problem we've seen other paw pad had issues they are cracking cuts abrasions coming off because of salt and ice so wipe off those paw pads when they come inside," Mortsakis said.

A little doggie spa treatment pays off too. Applying aquafor and other petroleum based products are great for your pet's paw pads.
