On Thursday, the jury found NYPD officer Peter Liang guilty of manslaughter and official misconduct in the shooting death of Akai Gurley. Liang fatally shot Gurley, who was unarmed at the time, in a dark stairwell at Brooklyn's Pink Houses in 2014.

The verdict sent shockwaves throughout the police community. However, activists said it was about time that police are held accountable for using excessive force.

Kimberly Ballinger, Gurley's former girlfriend and mother of their daughter, and attorney Scott Rynecki joined the PIX11 Morning News to talk about the verdict.
