PHOENIX – A cruel hoax tricked an Arizona Wendy’s manager into not only evacuating the restaurant’s customers but also shattering all of its windows.
On Jan. 30, someone pretending to represent the Phoenix Fire Department called the manager of the Wendy’s on 35th Avenue and Greenway Road in Phoenix and instructed the manager to test the location’s fire-response system, according to KNXV-TV.
The manager complied, according to police, and the prank caller then said that the test had caused a gas leak.
After all the customers were evacuated, the caller instructed the manager to shatter all of the windows.
Firefighters and local utility workers rushed to the scene, but found no evidence of a gas leak. The manager has filed a police report in connection with the incident.
A spokeswoman for the franchise told PIX11 News: “It was a malicious prank but the safety and security of our guests is of the utmost importance to us.”
