Man arrested for intoxicated driving in Canarsie found dead hours later in jail cell

CANARSIE, Brooklyn — A man arrested for driving while intoxicated was found dead in a Brooklyn jail cell Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to a call at 12:43 p.m. for a car accident on Avenue J in Canarsie. At the scene, officers determined one of the drivers, a 28-year-old male, was intoxicated.

He was arrested and taken to the Intoxicated Driver Testing Unit at the 78th Precinct. He was then brought back to the 69th Precinct for processing.

Police said around 5:30 p.m., the man was found unconscious and unresponsive in his jail cell.  He was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s identity has not been released at this time.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
