NEWARK, N.J. — A man and woman were shot and killed in an apartment where three young children were found unharmed, authorities said.

A motive for the slayings in Newark remains under investigation.

Essex County prosecutors say 23-year-old Ashley Jones and 28-year-old Jarrell Marshall, both of Newark, were found Saturday night in Jones' apartment. Both had been shot multiple times.

The three children — ages 1, 3 and 4 — found with them are now being cared for by relatives. Police say Jones was the mother of two of the children. The children were in the room next door at the time of the shooting.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose blamed the deaths on "the availability of too many guns." He said the slayings were "senseless" and "tragic."

No arrests have been made. The county's homicide task force is leading the investigation.
