JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A police officer who was being dragged down a street by a stolen car managed to pull out his gun and shoot the driver, authorities said.
Just before 1 a.m., two police officers noticed a stolen vehicle on Ocean Avenue and pulled the driver over at the corner at Martin Luther King Drive and Virginia Avenue, an official with knowledge of the investigation confirms. The driver then sped off as the officers approached, managing to drag one of the cops with him.
While the officer was being dragged, he pulled out his gun and shoot the driver through the windshield, striking the man in the head.
The driver was taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he is expected to recover. The officer was also hospitalized with a possible broken leg.
Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating. The names of the driver or officers have not been released.
The Jersey City Mayor's Office released the following statement regarding the officer0-involved shooting:
As the use of deadly force is the most serious action an officer takes on our behalf, Mayor Fulop has consistently supported an impartial investigation by a completely different entity and a presentation of the facts to a grand jury in all such cases. As always, we will cooperate fully with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.
