NEW YORK — Legendary character actor Abe Vigoda, who starred in "Barney Miller" and "The Godfather," has died. He was 94.
Vigoda's daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, told The Associated Press that Vigoda died Tuesday morning in his sleep. He had been staying at Fuchs' home in Woodland Park, New Jersey.
She said the cause of her father's death was old age.
"This man was never sick," Fuchs said.
Vigoda's two most noted roles were as the over-the-hill detective Phil Fish in the 1970s TV series "Barney Miller" and as the doomed Mafia soldier in "The Godfather."
In 1982, People Magazine incorrectly reported that Vigoda had died, setting off the first of many death hoaxes involving the actor.
