NEW YORK — A month after the Miss Universe flub, Steve Harvey is clearing the air with both Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez in an emotional two-part interview.
Titled “Miss Universe: The Truth,” the comedian apologized on his talk show to the beauty pageant contestants for his mishap that dominated the news for weeks. Harvey mistakenly named Miss Colombia as the winner of Miss Universe on Dec. 20 when Miss Philippines was the real winner.
The two-part interview began with a teary apology from Harvey.
“Because of a mistake I’ve made, I cast you into a spotlight, a place, that I never intended to, that I would not want happen to anybody. I just want to say how sorry I am. I really am. I’m beyond sorry for what happened that night and that it was you. At the end of the day, I hope we walk away from this with something special,” Harvey said to Gutierrez.
Gutierrez showed there was no hard feelings between her and Harvey and joked about the incident.
“How do you feel about the way I handled the situation?” Harvey asked Gutierrez in a preview of the interview airing tomorrow.
Miss Colombia took a moment and thought of the most appropriate way response — through a joke.
“You have to learn how to read cards, because it was on the card,” she said. “You wanted me to win.”
The audience and Harvey laughed, showing there’s no bad blood between the two.
Gutierrez spoke out about the incident about two weeks after the pageant, saying she “had to grieve for what happened.” But now that she has had some time to mourn, Gutierrez told W Radio she has a positive outlook.
Harvey’s interview with the real Miss Universe winner Pia Wurtzbach aired Monday. There, he also apologized for the “big mistake” he made. Wurtzbach also seemed to forgive Harvey for his mistake.
“I just wanted to say I’m truly sorry, really. I wish we all could have got it right that night,” Harvey said to Wurtbach.
The interview with Miss Colombia will air on Tuesday.
