8 families displaced after fire engulfs 3 residential Newark buildings

NEWARK, N.J. — Eight families are displaced after a 3-alarm fire blazed through three residential buildings in Newark Monday afternoon.

The fire started around 3 p.m., at a three-story home on Bergen Street, police said. The fire quickly escalated within 20 minutes, engulfing the roof of the building and spreading to two nearby houses.

Parts of one of the residential buildings that went up in flames collapsed.

The fire was taken under control around 5 p.m.

The Red Cross is helping eight families who have been displaced by the fire.

The injured firefighter's condition is still unknown.
