Man arrested for allegedly setting bench on fire inside Upper East Side church

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan — A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly setting a bench on fire inside a church in the Upper East Side.

Firefighters responded to a fire inside the Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest on East 90th Street around 1 p.m. The 40-year-old man sat down on the pew and set it on fire, police said.

He then picked up an object, threw it against a glass door and shattered it.

The fire was quickly put out by firefighters. There were no injuries.

The man was taken into custody and transported to the local hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Charges are still pending.
