PATERSON, N.J. — Investigators say a teenage boy who claimed he was shot on a Paterson street actually shot himself by accident.

The 16-year-old had told police that he was walking home when a man got out of a car and shot him around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. He said the man then got back in the car and drove away.

Officers found the boy in a home with a gunshot wound to the upper leg. But after growing suspicious, they eventually determined that he had shot himself.

Authorities have recovered the weapon they believe was used in the incident.

The teen will be charged with weapons offenses. He was being held Sunday at a detention center in Essex County.
