CORAM, N.Y. — Sgt. Louis Bonacasa, the New York Air National Guardsman who was killed in Afghanistan, was remembered Saturday during a solemn funeral service.

Bonacasa, 31, was one of six service members who were killed on Dec. 21, when a suicide bomber rammed his motorcycle into a patrol post near Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.

The funeral was complete with all the honors afforded to an American hero. Bagpipes played as his flag draped casket was carried by servicemen into New Beginnings Christian Center.

Bonacasa is survived by his wife of 11 years Deborah, and his 5-year-old daughter Lilianna.

His roommate, Sgt. Joseph Lemm, 45, an NYPD detective first grade on his third deployment to the Middle East, was also killed in the attack.

Lemm’s funeral Mass was held Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, where police and servicemembers mourned his death.
