According to the NYPD, Jihad Jackson, 16, was shot in the neck at a New Year's Eve gathering about a half hour before midnight.
Jackson had been with his family in Washington D.C., but he took a bus back to New York to be with friends.
"The last thing I told him was to be safe and stay inside," his mother Marguerite Tolson-Jackson said outside the family home Saturday.
And while the gunman has not been caught, police announced the arrest of the hosts of the evening.
According to cops, Eduardo Placencia, 18, his mother, Natalie Placencia, 49, and her boyfriend, Dorian Carr, 48, have been charged with tampering with physical evidence.
After Jackson was shot in the neck inside the Placencia's apartment, they allegedly dragged him outside to the sidewalk.
EMS found him there at 109th Avenue and Merrick Boulevard. Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jackson's distraught mother wants to know what happened to her son.
"If anybody knows anything, please come forward. Don't let my son's death be in vain," Tolson-Jackson said.
The family is planning the 16-year-old's funeral.
"He was a good kid and anybody who knew him, knew he was a good kid," Tolson-Jackson said.
