CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A gunman was shot and killed after opening fire inside of a North Carolina mall filled with last-minute shoppers Thursday afternoon.

Paramedics were called to Northlake Mall in Charlotte just after 2 p.m.

Shauntelle Hamrick, the manager of the Journeys shoe store, told CNN an altercation broke out inside of a store in the mall.

Hamrick says she watched as a group of people "ganged up" on a man. During the fight, someone pulled a gun, and a friend of the man was shot in the leg. The severity of his injuries are unclear at this time.

According to WSOC, a police officer shot and killed the gunman.

A witness in the mall reported to WSOC that he heard "pops that sounded like gunfire" and saw people screaming and running.
