KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Shortly after her baby was born, a Michigan woman learned that her fiancé and mother died en route to the hospital.

Crystal Matrau-Belt gave birth to Jeremiah James at Bronson Methodist Hospital Saturday afternoon, according to MLive.

As soon as her fiancé, Emil Skokan III, and her mother, Peggy Nichols, learned the news, they decided to ride together to the hospital.

Skokan, 34, decided to drive. He lost control of his car and hit a tree, killing both passengers. Police say that speed was a factor in the crash.

Matrau-Belt said Skokan texted her moments before, saying “I’ll meet you up there and that he loved me.”

Skokan would have celebrated his 35th birthday Sunday. Nichols was 53. Their funerals will be held respectively Friday and Thursday.

Matrau-Belt recalled asking her stepdad where her fiancé was. He replied, “‘Honey, that’s what we need to talk to you about.’ I just all of a sudden had a sinking feeling something was wrong. I just didn’t know that it was my fiancé and my mom.”

A GoFundMe account has been set up to benefit Matrau-Belt.
