ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. — A man armed with a BB gun was shot by police in New Jersey after security spotted him sitting in a crashed car and called officers to the scene, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 3:30 a.m. Monday outside 218 Route 17 in Rochelle Park, according to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

It was there that Matthew Chaseman, 46, of Maywood, N.J., was spotted by security in his car, which had crashed sometime prior to the encounter with police. Chaseman had stayed in the wrecked car, prompting building security to call the police, Molinelli said.

Outside that parked car, officers opened fire on Chaseman, who was armed with a BB gun, the tip of which was painted orange, Molinelli said. Chaseman was struck in his lower body and taken to a hospital in unknown condition. No officers were hurt, Molinelli said.
