THE BRONX — A garbage hauler overturned Thursday morning on the Major Deegan Expressway, leaving in its wake a trash-strewn highway and miles of backup during the early commute.

It happened in the westbound lanes near the Cross Bronx and Hamilton Bridge, officials said. Spilled debris is blocking the right lane on the entrance ramp to the westbound Cross Bronx.

Shortly after 8 a.m., the 18-wheeler was still on its side as crews worked to clean up the mess. The on-ramp is blocked from the Major Deegan southbound to the Cross Bronx westbound, sparking delays that stretch back toward Yonkers.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. There was no word on the driver's status.
