LOWER MANHATTAN— Mayor Bill de Blasio will undergo surgery Friday for a hernia, his office said Thursday.

The hernia “developed recently,” said Karen Hinton, a spokeswoman for the mayor. Hinton says doctors told de Blasio it was time to deal with it before it got worse.

She says athletic activity may have hastened the onset of the hernia.

The recovery time is expected be quick, he plans to return to City Hall on Monday.
