FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – There will be police presence at a Long Island middle school following threats of a handgun being possibly brought in to harm students on Monday, Nassau County cops said.

The incident was reported at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Schools officials at Howitt Middle School reported rumors on social media that two 8th graders had made threats to harm students today and that one of the students was in possession of a handgun, according to detectives.

Authorities determined the rumored threats were unsubstantiated and fueled by hearsay through social media.
