Faulty power strip sparks East Flatbush fire that killed 2, injured 5

EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn – Two people are dead and five others were hurt after a fire ripped through a  two-story building early Saturday morning, according to the FDNY.

The New York City Fire Department says the 2-alarm blaze started at 404 E 49th Street about 5:45 a.m. Saturday. It was extinguished about a half hour later.

FDNY says 76-year-old Lord Kinard and 71-year-old Octavia Kinard were identified as the two deceased victims from the fire.

The five victims, including two firefighters were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries, according to the FDNY.

Firefighters say the fire was caused by a faulty power strip.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the scene.
