MERRICK, N.Y. — Police are searching for a suspect who strangled a Merrick woman and left her body in a backyard Wednesday evening.

The grisly discovery was made about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on Smith Street, police said.

It was then that officers were called to a home in Merrick, about 35 miles east of Manhattan. They found the body of a female victim inside a cottage behind a home, police said.

Officials at the scene said the body had been bound.

The victim was identified as Suzanne Goldfarb, 48, of Merrick.

The medical examiner determined her cause of death was asphyxiation.

The investigation is ongoing.
