PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — Suffolk County police have arrested a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman on Long Island early Saturday.

The victim was walking at the corner of Bay Avenue and Main Street in Patchogue around 4 a.m. when she was approached by a man driving a green Lincoln, police said. The man said he was a taxi driver and offered her a ride.

The victim accepted and asked the man to drive her to a nearby store.

The suspect, Adil Raja, took the victim to a different location and sexually assaulted her in the back of the car after displaying a BB gun, police said.

The victim exited the car after the assault and called 911, while the man drove away. Shortly after, police located a car matching the description. Raja was positively identified and taken into custody.

Raja, 22, was charged with first-degree rape. The Central Islip man will be held overnight and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court on Sunday.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have been a victim to a similar incident to call 631-854-8552.
