LOS ANGELES – Six Spirit Airlines customers say they were kicked off a flight at Los Angeles International Airport Monday because they are black.
“I’m really humiliated just for the simple fact that you hear about this type of stuff happening in America, discrimination issues and stuff like that, but to actually experience it first-hand… ” passenger Alexandria Wright told CBS Los Angeles.
In cellphone video recorded on the plane, one passenger can be heard saying that the flight attendant was being rude, and that “we have witnesses that this man wasn’t causing any type of problem.”
Witnesses interviewed when the plane landed told reporters that the three couples were being disruptive before they were kicked off.
Spirit Airlines said in a statement that “Four passengers became unruly and were causing trouble with other passengers. Flight crew asked them to stop. When they did not, law enforcement was called and they were removed from the flight.”
While Spirit claims it was just four people, multiple media outlets are reporting that three couples were forced off the plane.
The passengers said the incident began because the airline had double-booked seats, and the flight attendant was asking him to move to make room for someone else assigned to the same seat.
After the six passengers were escorted off the plane, Flight 868 took off at 8 p.m. for Dallas.
Spirit Airlines did not return PIX11’s request for comment.
